กระเจี๊ยบแดง กระเจี๊ยบ กระเจี๊ยบเปรี้ยว ผักเก็งเค็ง ส้มเก็งเค็ง ส้มตะเลงเครง ส้มปู

ลักษณะทางพฤกษศาสตร์ของกระเจี๊ยบแดงจะเป็นไม้พุ่ม ความสูงของต้นประมาณ 1-2 เมตร กิ่งก้านของต้นมีสีม่วงแดง มีขนตามกิ่งและก้านรำไร ใบกระเจี๊ยบเป็นใบเดี่ยว รูปทรงไข่หรือรูปนิ้วมือ ขนาดใบกว้างกระมาณ 7-12 เซนติเมตร ยาว 8-15 เซนติเมตร ขอบใบจัก ส่วนดอกกระเจี๊ยบมีสีเหลือง กลางดอกมีสีม่วงอมแดง ขนาดความดอกกว้างประมาณ 4-5 เซนติเมตร ดอกกระเจี๊ยบจะออกเดี่ยวหรือดอกคู่ตามซอกใบ ในดอกกระเจี๊ยบมีเกสรตัวผู้เชื่อมกันเป็นหลอด ผลเผ็นผลแห้ง แตกได้ มีกลีบเลี้ยงสีแดงฉ่ำน้ำหุ้มไว้
ถิ่นกำเนิดของกระเจี๊ยบแดงอยู่ในแถบแอฟริกาตะวันตก
1. ลดไข้
ในกระเจี๊ยบมีสารพฤกษเคมีที่สำคัญ คือ สารต้านอนุมูลอิสระทั้งสารในกลุ่มฟีนอลิก สารกลุ่มฟลาโวนอยด์ และสารในกลุ่มแอนโธไซยานิน ซึ่งจากข้อมูลทางวิชาการแสดงให้เห็นว่า สารพฤกษเคมีดังกล่าวมีฤทธิ์ในการต้านอนุมูลอิสระ ลดไข้ และต้านการอักเสบ นอกจากนี้วิตามินซีในกระเจี๊ยบยังมีส่วนช่วยเสริมความแข็งแรงให้ระบบภูมิคุ้มกันร่างกายด้วย
2. แก้ไอ ละลายเสมหะในตำรับยาแผนโบราณพบว่าใบกระเจี๊ยบมีฤทธิ์แก้ไอ ละลายเสมหะ ขับเมือกมันในลำคอให้ไหลลงสู่ทวารหนัก ทั้งยังช่วยแก้โรคพยาธิตัวจี๊ดได้อีกต่างหาก
3. ขับปัสสาวะจากการศึกษาให้ผู้ป่วยดื่มน้ำสกัดกลีบเลี้ยงของกระเจี๊ยบแดง พบว่า กระเจี๊ยบแดงมีฤทธิ์ขับปัสสาวะได้ดี โดยในการทดลองได้ใช้กลีบเลี้ยงกระเจี๊ยบแดงตากแห้ง บดเป็นผง 3 กรัม ชงน้ำเดือด 1 ถ้วยแก้ว หรือประมาณ 300 มิลลิลิตร ให้ผู้ป่วยดื่มวันละ 3 ครั้ง เป็นเวลา 1 ปี ส่วนในตำราพื้นบ้าน แนะนำให้นำกลีบเลี้ยงของกระเจี๊ยบแดงมาชงกับน้ำร้อนดื่มเป็นยาขับปัสสาวะได้
4. แก้กระหาย ให้ร่างกายสดชื่นดอกกระเจี๊ยบมีรสเปรี้ยว เพราะมีวิตามินซี และกรดซิตริก จึงช่วยขับน้ำลายและแก้กระหาย โดยนำดอกกระเจี๊ยบตากแห้ง ต้มในน้ำเดือดเป็นน้ำกระเจี๊ยบหอมหวานชื่นใจ
5. รักษาแผลในกระเพาะอาหารดอกกระเจี๊ยบมีสรรพคุณต้านการอักเสบ และมีสรรพคุณช่วยรักษาแผลในกระเพาะอาหาร หล่อลื่นลำไส้ และเป็นยาระบายอ่อน ๆ
6. ลดไขมันในเลือดส่วนเมล็ดของกระเจี๊ยบแดงมีสรรพคุณช่วยลดไขมันและคอเลสเตอรอลในเลือด โดยนำเมล็ดกระเจี๊ยบตากแห้งมาบดให้เป็นผง จากนั้นนำมาชงกับน้ำร้อนหรือต้มน้ำดื่ม ช่วยลดไขมันในเลือด บำรุงเลือด ขับน้ำดี แก้ปัสสาวะขัด
7. ป้องกันโรคหัวใจสารแอนโธไซยานินที่ทำให้กลีบเลี้ยงของดอกกระเจี๊ยบมีสีแดง เป็นสารต้านอนุมูลอิสระที่ช่วยทำให้เลือดไม่หนืด ช่วยลดไขมันเลวในเส้นเลือด จึงป้องกันไม่ให้หลอดเลือดแข็งตัว ป้องกันหัวใจขาดเลือด และลดความเสี่ยงการเกิดโรคหัวใจ โดยนิยมนำกระเจี๊ยบแดงไปต้มกับพุทราจีน เพื่อบำรุงหัวใจ
8. รักษาแผลใบของกระเจี๊ยบมีสรรพคุณในการต้านอาการอักเสบ จากตำรับยาแผนโบราณจะพบว่ามีการนำใบสดของกระเจี๊ยบแดง ล้างให้สะอาด และตำให้ละเอียด จากนั้นนำมาประคบฝีหรือต้มใบแล้วนำน้ำต้มใบมาล้างแผล ก็จะช่วยบรรเทาอาการแผลให้หายเร็วขึ้น นอกจากนี้ ใบยังมีวิตามินเอ สามารถทานบำรุงสายตาได้
9. ป้องกันโลหิตจางกระเจี๊ยบแดงมีธาตุเหล็ก ซึ่งเป็นแร่ธาตุที่สำคัญของฮีโมโกลบิน อีกทั้งความเป็นกรดของสารพฤกษเคมีในดอกกระเจี๊ยบแดงยังช่วยเพิ่มการดูดซึมและการกระจายแร่ธาตุต่าง ๆ ในร่างกาย ส่งผลให้กระเจี๊ยบแดงช่วยป้องกันภาวะโลหิตจางได้
10. ลดน้ำตาลในเลือดจากการศึกษากับผู้ป่วยโรคเบาหวานชนิดที่ 2 ที่ได้รับชากระเจี๊ยบแดง 3 กรัม ชงกับน้ำร้อน 150 มิลลิลิตร ติดต่อกันเป็นเวลา 1 เดือน พบว่า ระดับน้ำตาลในเลือดของอาสาสมัครลดลงสูงสุดจาก 162.1 เป็น 112.5 มิลลิกรัมต่อเดซิลิตร จากกลไกทางชีวภาพของสารพฤกษเคมีที่ช่วยลดการย่อยและการดูดซึมน้ำตาลโมเลกุลเดี่ยวและโมเลกุลคู่ผ่านการยับยั้งเอนไซม์แอลฟา-อะไมเลส แลแอลฟา-กลูโคซิเดส
11. ลดความดันโลหิตจากการศึกษาทางคลินิกในอาสาสมัครที่มีความเสี่ยงภาวะความดันโลหิตสูง โดยให้อาสาสมัครดื่มชากระเจี๊ยบแดง 1.25 กรัม ชงกับน้ำร้อน 240 มิลลิลิตร วันละ 3 ครั้ง ติดต่อกันเป็นเวลา 6 สัปดาห์ พบว่า ความดันโลหิตของอาสาสมัครลดลง 7.2 มิลลิเมตรปรอท (ขณะหัวใจบีบตัว) และ 3.1 มิลลิเมตรปรอท (ขณะหัวใจคลายตัว)
12. ปกป้องไตการศึกษาในคลินิกที่ให้อาสาสมัครดื่มน้ำกระเจี๊ยบแดง 24 กรัมต่อวัน พบว่า สารพฤกษเคมีในกระเจี๊ยบแดงมีส่วนช่วยขับครีเอตินิน กรดยูริก ซิเตรต ทราเทรต แคลเซียม โพแทสเซียม และฟอสเฟต และในข้อมูลสัตว์ทดลองยังพบว่า กรดของสารพฤกษเคมีในดอกกระเจี๊ยบแดงขนาด 750 มิลลิกรัมต่อกิโลกรัม สามารถป้องกันและยับยั้งการพัฒนาของก้อนนิ่วได้ ทว่าผลการยับยั้งนิ่วในคนยังต้องศึกษากันต่อไป
13. ฆ่าเชื้อแบคทีเรียในทางเดินปัสสาวะมีการศึกษาที่ยืนยันว่า กระเจี๊ยบแดงมีฤทธิ์ฆ่าเชื้อแบคทีเรียในทางเดินปัสสาวะ โดยสารในกระเจี๊ยบแดงจะทำให้ปัสสาวะเป็นกรดจึงช่วยฆ่าเชื้อแบคทีเรียในทางเดินปัสสาวะได้
ข้อควรระวังของกระเจี๊ยบแดงโทษและความเป็นพิษของกระเจี๊ยบแดงก็มีเหมือนกันนะคะ โดยจากการศึกษาพบว่า สารสกัดดอกกระเจี๊ยบแดงในปริมาณที่มากเกินไปมีผลต่อการสร้างอสุจิและจำนวนอสุจิที่ลดลง จึงไม่ควรกินกระเจี๊ยบแดงในปริมาณมาก หรือติดต่อกันเป็นระยะเวลานานเกินไป
นอกจากนี้ ผู้ป่วยที่มีการทำงานของไตบกพร่องก็ไม่ควรทานกระเจี๊ยบแดง รวมทั้งสตรีมีครรภ์และสตรีให้นมบุตร ควรหลีกเลี่ยงการกินกระเจี๊ยบแดงติดต่อกันเป็นเวลานานเช่นกันค่ะ เพราะผลการศึกษาในหนูทดลองพบว่า อาจทำให้ลูกหนูเข้าสู่วัยเจริญพันธุ์ช้าลง
