ต้น: ไม้ยืนต้น มีความสูงประมาณ 15 เมตร ลำต้นตั้งตรงผิวเรียบ เห็นข้อปล้องชัดเจน ต้นอ่อนและต้นแก่สีน้ำตาลเทา ไม่มีน้ำยาง ใบ: ใบเป็นใบประกอบแบบขนนก แตกออกเป็นกระจุก บริเวณยอด ใบย่อยเป็นเส้นตรง ยาวประมาณ 2 เมตร ดอก: ดอกช่อ ออกบริเวณโคนใบล่างสุด มีกาบหุ้มช่อดอกขนาดใหญ่ ดอกย่อยแยกเป็นดอกตัวผู้และดอกตัวเมีย ผล: ผลรูปกลมหรือรี ผลสุกจะเปลี่ยนจากเขียวเป็นสีแดง เมล็ดมีขนาดใหญ่ เมื่อผ่าตามขวางจะเห็นลายภายในสีน้ำตาลแก่สลับขาว เหมือน ลายหินอ่อน มีรสฝาดเฝื่อน นิเวศวิทยา ขึ้นได้ดีในที่ที่มีแสงตลอดทั้งวัน
