มะขุน มะโอ (เหนือ)

ต้น : เป็นพรรณไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลาง แตกกิ่งก้านสาขาที่เรือนยอดของต้น ลำต้นมีสีน้ำตาลและมีหนามเล็กๆทั่วไป สูงประมาณ 8 เมตร ใบ : ใบเดี่ยว รูปมนรี กว้างประมาณ 1-4 เซนติเมตร ยาว 4-6 เซนติเมตร ปลายใบและโคนใบมน ขอบใบเป็นคลื่นเล็กน้อย พื้นใบเป็นสีเขียวและมัน ก้านใบมีส่วนที่แผ่ออกเป็นปีกรูปคล้ายหัวใจ ดอก : ออกดอกเป็นช่อและดอกเดี่ยว แต่ส่วนมากมักจะพบเป็นดอกเดี่ยวออกอยู่ตามง่ามใบ สีขาว มี 4 กลีบ ปลายกลีบมน มีเกสรเพศผู้มีจำนวน 20-25 อัน ผล: ทรงกลมโต ขนาดของผลยาวประมาณ 5-7 เซนติเมตร ส่วนหัวของผลจะนูนขึ้นมาเป็นกระจุก เมื่อยังอ่อนเป็นสีเขียว พอแก่หรือสุกเป็นสีเหลือง เปลือกผลมีต่อมน้ำมันมาก
เป็นพรรณไม้กลางแจ้ง เจริญเติบโตได้ดีในดินที่ร่วนซุย ต้องการความชื้นปานกลาง ขยายพันธุ์ด้วยวิธีตอนและเมล็ด
เปลือกผลสีขาวมีธาตุฟอสฟอรัส แคลเซียมและอื่นๆ ใช้เชื่อมเป็นอาหารหวาน รับประทานเป็นผลไม้ ทำยำส้มโอ ใส่ข้าวยำ ทำเมี่ยงส้มโอและน้ำผลไม้ ผิวผลนอกสุดมีน้ำมันหอมระเหย
