ต้นตะคร้ำ จัดเป็นพรรณไม้ยืนต้นผลัดใบขนาดกลาง ลำต้นเปลาตรง มีความสูงได้ประมาณ 10 - 20 เมตร เมื่อโตวัดรอบ 100 - 200 เซนติเมตร แตกกิ่งก้านสาขารอบ ๆ เรือนยอดของต้น โคนต้นเป็นพูพอน ตามกิ่งอ่อนและก้านช่อดอกมีขนสีเทาขึ้นปกคลุมกระจายอยู่ทั่วไป และมีรอยแผลใบปรากฏอยู่ตามกิ่ง เปลือกต้นเป็นสีเทาหรือสีน้ำตาลปนเทาแตกเป็นสะเก็ดหรือเป็นหลุมตื้น ๆ ทั่วไป ส่วนเปลือกด้านในเป็นสีนวล มีทางสีชมพูสลับ และมียาง สีชมพูปนแดงไหลออกเมื่อสับดู โดยยางนี้หากทิ้งไว้นาน ๆ จะเปลี่ยนเป็นสีเหลืองคล้ำ ส่วนกระพี้จะเป็นสีชมพูอ่อน ๆ และมีแก่นเป็นสีน้ำตาลแดง ขยายพันธุ์ด้วยวิธีการเพาะเมล็ด เป็นไม้กลางแจ้ง ในประเทศไทยพบขึ้นตามที่ราบตามป่าโปร่ง ป่าผลัดใบ ป่าดิบแล้งในที่ค่อนข้างราบและใกล้ลำห้วยทั่วไป ป่าดิบเขา และตามป่าเบญจพรรณชื้น ที่ความสูงจากระดับน้ำทะเลประมาณ 50-800 เมตร ส่วนในต่างประเทศพบได้ที่ประเทศอินเดีย พม่า ลาว กัมพูชา เอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้
