จัดอยู่ในวงศ์ถั่ว (FABACEAE หรือ LEGUMINOSAE) และอยู่ในวงศ์ย่อยราชพฤกษ์ (CAESALPINIOIDEAE หรือ CAESALPINIACEAE)
ลำต้นฝางเป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลาง เปลือกลำต้น และกิ่งก้านมีหนามขนาดใหญ่ โคนหนามพองโตคล้ายเต้านม
ใบประกอบด้วยก้านใบยาว และมีก้านย่อยที่ประกอบด้วยใบย่อย ก้านใบ 1 ก้าน มีก้านย่อยประมาณ 12 ก้าน แต่ละก้านย่อยประกอบด้วยใบย่อยประมาณ 13 คู่ ออกเรียงสลับตรงข้ามกันเป็นคู่ๆ ใบมีลักษณะแบบขนนก คล้ายใบมะขาม สีเขียวสด และเมื่อแก่มีสีเขียวเข้ม ใบเรียบ ปลายใบมน และเว้าตรงกลางเล็กน้อย ผิวใบเรียบทั้ง 2 ด้าน
ดอกฝางออกดอกเป็นช่อบริเวณส่วนยอดของต้น ดอกมีสีเหลือง กลางดอกมีสีแดง ออกรวมกันเป็นช่อตามปลายกิ่ง และซอกใบใกล้ปลายกิ่ง กลีบรองดอกมี 5 กลีบรองว้อนทับกันที่ขอบกลีบ โดยมีกลีบล่างสุดมีลักษณะโค้งงอ และมีขนาดใหญ่สุด ส่วนกลีบดอกมี 5 กลีบเช่นกัน มีลักษณะเป็นรูปไข่กลับหัว ขอบกลีบมีลักษณะย่น ด้านในดอกมีเกสรตัวผู้ 10 อัน
ผลเป็นฝัก มีลักษณะเป็นรูปสี่เหลี่ยมแข็ง แบนสีเขียว เหมือนมีดปังตอ เมื่อแก่จะมีสีน้ำตาลหรือน้ำตาลเข้ม และแก่เต็มที่หรือแห้งจะมีสีน้ำตาลดำหรือดำ บริเวณผิวฝักมีลายแต้มเป็นจุดๆ ทำให้มีลักษณะคล้ายกับถั่วแปบ โดยมีปลายฝักยื่นออกมาเป็นจงอยแหลม ด้านในฝักมีเมล็ดทรงเรียวรี 2-4 เมล็ด/ฝัก
มีถิ่นกำเนิดในอินเดีย แต่มีอยู่ในทั่วไปในป่าเมืองไทย แล้วนำไปปลูกในฟิลิปปินส์ มาเลเซีย
แก่นฝาง - รสฝาด เค็ม ชุ่ม เป็นยาสุขุม ออกฤทธิ์ต่อหัวใจและตับ มีฤทธิ์บำรุงโลหิต ช่วยขับประจำเดือน ใช้เป็นยาแก้ปวด แก้บวม แก้เลือดอุดตัน ทำให้เลือดไหลเวียนสะดวก บรรเทาอาการท้องร่วง ขับเสมหะ แก้ร้อนใน บรรเทาอาการโลหิตออกทางทวารหนักและทางปัสสาวะ แก้อาการหัวใจขาดเลือด (จุกเสียดแน่นและเจ็บหน้าอก) กระจายเลือดที่อุดตัน ลดการปวดมดลูกในสตรีหลังคลอด นอกจากนี้ยังมีฤทธิ์บรรเทาอาการเลือดออกตามอวัยวะต่างๆ ได้ดี เช่น ในลำไส้และกระเพาะอาหาร เลือดกำเดาในจมูก เป็นต้น น้ำต้มแก่นฝางให้สีแดง ใช้เป็นหลักในการทำน้ำยาอุทัย ใช้แก้ร้อนใน แก้กระหายน้ำได้ดี
เมล็ด - เมล็ดแก่แห้ง นำไปต้มกับน้ำดื่มเป็นยารักษาโรคความดันโลหิตสูง หรืออาจบดเป็นผงกินก็ได้
เนื้อไม้ - เป็นส่วนผสมหลักในยาบำรุงหลังคลอดบุตร ผสมกับปูนขาว บดทาหน้าผากหลัง คลอดบุตร ช่วยให้เย็นศีรษะ และลดอาการเจ็บปวด เป็นยาขับระดูอย่างแรง แก้ท้องร่วง แก้ธาตุพิการ แก้ร้อนใน แก้โลหิตออกทางทวารหนักและทวารเบา แก้โลหิตตกหนัก แก้เสมหะ ดี และโลหิต
