เป็นไม้ยืนต้น สูง 5 - 10 เมตร ใบเดี่ยว เรียงตรงข้าม รูปวงรีหรือรูปใบหอก กว้าง 2.5 - 4 ซม. ยาว 6 - 10 ซม. ขอบเป็นคลื่น ใบอ่อนสีแดงหรือน้ำตาลแดง เนื้อใบบางค่อนข้างเหนียว ผิวมัน ดอกช่อ ออกที่ซอกใบ กลีบดอกสีขาวและร่วงง่าย กลีบเลี้ยงและฐานดอกสีแดงหนาแข็ง ผลเป็นผลสด รูปไข่

ในตำรายาไทย ใช้ดอกตูมแห้งแก้ปวดฟัน โดยใช้ดอกแช่เหล้าเอาสำลีชุบอุดรูฟัน และใช้ขนาด 5 - 8 ดอก ชงน้ำเดือด ดื่มเฉพาะส่วนน้ำหรือใช้เคี้ยวแก้ท้องเสีย ขับลม แก้ท้องอืดเฟ้อ นอกจากนี้ใช้ผสมในยาอมบ้วนปากดับกลิ่นปาก พบว่าในน้ำมันหอมรเหยที่กลั่นจากดอกมีสารยูเจนอล ซึ่งมีฤทธิ์เป็นยาชาเฉพาะที่ จึงใช้แก้ปวดฟัน และมีฤทธิ์ลดการบีบตัวของลำไส้ ทำให้เกิดอาการปวดท้องลดลง ช่วยขับน้ำดี ลดอาการจุกเสียดที่เกิดจากการย่อยไม่สมบูรณ์ และสามารถฆ่าเชื้อแบคทีเรียหลายชนิดเช่น เชื้อโรคไทฟอยด์ บิดชนิดไม่มีตัว เชื้อหนองเป็นต้น นอกจากนี้ยังกระตุ้นให้มีการหลั่งเมือก และลดการเป็นกรดในกระเพาะอาหารด้วย
