ต้นส้มป่อย จัดเป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดเล็กหรือไม้พุ่มรอเลื้อยทอดลำต้นเกาะเกี่ยวขึ้นไป สูงได้ประมาณ 3-6 เมตร แต่ไม่มีมือสำหรับเกาะเลื้อยพาดพันต้นไม้อื่น เถามีเนื้อแข็ง ขนาดใหญ่ เปลือกลำต้นเป็นสีน้ำตาล เถาอ่อนเป็นสีน้ำตาลแดง มีขนกำมะหยี่หรือขนสั้นหนานุ่ม ตามลำต้นและกิ่งก้านมีหนามแหลมสั้นอยู่ทั่วไปและมีขนหูใบรูปหัวใจ ขยายพันธุ์ด้วยวิธีการเพาะเมล็ด ตอนกิ่ง และการปักชำกิ่ง เจริญเติบโตได้ดีในดินทุกประเภทที่ระบายน้ำได้ดี ชอบความชื้นปานกลางถึงน้อย และชอบแสงแดดมาก ขึ้นทั่วไปในแถบเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้และเอเชียใต้ เป็นไม้ที่มีความทนทานต่อสภาพแห้งแล้งได้ดี มักพบขึ้นตามป่าคืนสภาพ ป่าดิบแล้ง ป่าเบญจพรรณ ที่ราบเชิงเขา และที่รกร้างทั่วไป
ใบส้มป่อย ใบเป็นใบประกอบแบบขนนกสองชั้น ออกเรียงสลับ ช่อใบย่อยมีประมาณ 5-10 คู่ ส่วนช่อย่อยมีประมาณ 10-35 คู่ ต่อช่อ ใบย่อยเรียงตรงข้าม ไม่มีก้านใบย่อย ลักษณะของใบย่อยเป็นรูปขอบขนานขนาดเล็ก ปลายใบมนหรือแหลม ที่ปลายเป็นติ่งหนามแหลมอ่อนโค้ง โคนใบมนหรือตัด ส่วนขอบใบหนาเรียบ ใบมีขนาดกว้างประมาณ 0.8-3 มิลลิเมตร และยาวประมาณ 3.5-11.5 มิลลิเมตร แผ่นใบเรียบ ก้านใบยาวประมาณ 3.6-5 เซนติเมตร มีขนสั้นนุ่มและหนาแน่น พบก้อนนูนสีน้ำตาลคล้ายต่อม 1 อัน อยู่ที่โคนของก้านใบ แกนกลางยาวประมาณ 6.6-8.5 เซนติเมตร ส่วนก้านใบย่อยสั้นมาก ยาวได้ประมาณ 0.5 มิลลิเมตร หรือน้อยกว่านั้น เกลี้ยงและมีขนนุ่มหนาแน่น
ดอกส้มป่อย ออกดอกเป็นช่อกระจุกรูปทรงกลม โดยจะออกที่ปลายกิ่งหรืออกตามซอกใบข้างลำต้นประมาณ 1-3 ช่อดอกต่อข้อ มีขนาดประมาณ 0.7-1.3 เซนติเมตร มีดอกประมาณ 35-45 ดอก ก้านช่อดอกยาวประมาณ 2.5-3.2 มิลลิเมตร มีขนนุ่มหนาแน่น มีใบประดับดอก 1 อัน ลักษณะเป็นรูปแถบ ความยาวไม่เกิน 1 มิลลิเมตร โคนสอบเรียว สีแดง มีขนกระจายอยู่ทั่วไป ดอกย่อยมีขนาดเล็กอัดกันแน่นอยู่เป็นแกนดอก กลีบดอกเป็นหลอดสีขาวนวล กลีบเลี้ยงและกลีบดอกมีอย่างละ 5 กลีบ หลอดกลีบกว้างประมาณ 1-1.5 มิลลิเมตร และยาวประมาณ 2.5-3 เซนติเมตร ปลายแหลมเป็นสีแดง หรืออาจมีสีขาวปนบ้างเล็กน้อย ส่วนกลีบดอก หลอดกลีบมีขนาดกว้างประมาณ 1-1.5 มิลลิเมตร และยาวประมาณ 3.5-4 มิลลิเมตร มีขนบ้างเล็กน้อยที่ปลายกลีบ ดอกมีเกสรเพศผู้ประมาณ 200-250 อัน โดยยาวประมาณ 4-6 มิลลิเมตร ส่วนเกสรเพศเมีย รังไข่ยาวประมาณ 1 มิลลิเมตร มีออวุลประมาณ 10-12 ออวุล ก้านรังไข่ยาวประมาณ 1 มิลลิเมตร ก้านและยอดเกสรเพศเมียยาวประมาณ 2.5-3.5 มิลลิเมตร เป็นสีขาวอมเหลืองหรือสีเขียวอมเหลือง โดยจะออกดอกในช่วงเดือนมกราคมถึงเดือนพฤษภาคม
ผลส้มป่อย ออกผลเป็นฝัก ลักษณะของฝักเป็นรูปขอบขนาน แบนยาว ผิวฝักเป็นลอนคลื่นเป็นข้อ ๆ ตามเมล็ด ปลายฝักมีหางแหลม สันฝักหนา ผิวฝักขรุขระหรือย่นมากเมื่อแห้ง ฝักมีขนาดกว้างประมาณ 1.3-1.4 เซนติเมตร และยาวประมาณ 7-9.3 เซนติเมตร ฝักอ่อนเปลือกเป็นสีเขียวอมแดง เมื่อแก่แล้วฝักจะเปลี่ยนเป็นสีน้ำตาลเข้มหรือสีน้ำตาลดำ ก้านฝักยาวประมาณ 2.8-3 เซนติเมตร ในแต่ละฝักจะมีเมล็ดประมาณ 5-12 เมล็ด เมล็ดส้มป่อยมีลักษณะเป็นรูปทรงแบนรี สีดำผิวมัน มีขนาดกว้างประมาณ 4-5 มิลลิเมตร และยาวประมาณ 7-8 มิลลิเมตร โดยจะติดผลในช่วงเดือนพฤษภาคมถึงเดือนตุลาคม ฝักมีสารในกลุ่มซาโปนินสูงถึง 20% เมื่อนำมาตีกับน้ำจะเกิดฟอง
